Sustainability Policy 2025

1. Purpose and Scope

The purpose of Sustainable Policy is to define the commitment and principles that safeguard environment, socio-economic, culture and customers with the aim to creating values for promoting and conducting hospitality business professionally, responsibly and sustainably.

This policy shall be executed within the framework of Bhutan Green Hotel Standard 2023 and the Internal Service Rule-2024 of the hotel. Therefore, the policy will take into account the internal governing system and business operations, and benefit related to environment, social, economic, cultural and customers, contributing to sustainable development goal of the hotel and nation in general.

2. Vision and Mission

Sustainability refers to meeting the needs of the present while at the same time be responsible for further needs.

Mission: Provide quality accommodation, services, and authentic experiences with excellence, responsibly and sustainably.

3. Commitments and Actions

The ethical, transparent and responsible system and management approach to sustainable development and promotion of The Seva Hotel will certainly minimize the environmental impact and maximize the socio-economic gain. This policy is based on hotel’s core values which shall be applied in business operations and actions in-line with the governing rules and regulations of the hotel and related legislation of the country. To achieve this, The Seva Hotel is committed to the following Actions:

A. Sustainable Management and Compliance

The operation and management is significantly guided by its core values such as Integrity, Accountability, Transparency, Honesty and Care. These values, internal and external legal requirements allow the hotel to executive its activities and business operation responsibly. To achieve this, the hotel is committed to:

a) Internal Control

    • Sustainable policy developed and implemented for encouraging sustainable practices in business operation through awareness creation and capacity building;
    • Enforced Internal Service Rule (ISR) 2024 of The Seva Hotel, endorsed by the Department of Labour under the Ministry of Industry Commerce and Employment (MoICE) for promoting human rights, work place safety, social security, sexual harassment, recruitment, promotion, leave, code of conduct, benefit and welfare of the employees;
    • Instituted Head of Department (HoD) Committee for major decision making in business operation, finance, administration and disciplinary The committee is also responsible for the implementation of hotel plans, program and sustainable practices in hotel operation, management and business system;
    • Assigned dedicated and capable focal person for the development of sustainable policy and implementation of sustainable action plan, staff awareness and promoting sustainable and best practices in the business operation;
    • Developed and implemented environmental, social, economic and cultural policy in the hotel

b) External Requirement

    • Comply with government regulatory requirement such as Bhutan Green Hotel Standards 2023, Labour Act of Bhutan 2007, Building Construction Regulation 2023, Tourism Policy and Regulation 2022, Hotel Classification Standards, Thimphu Thromde Development Control Regulation 2016, National Environment Protection Act of Bhutan 2007, Bhutan Food and Drug Authority and hotel related regulations for promoting environment, social, economic and cultural preservation and best practices towards sustainable promotion and development of The Seva Hotel.

B. Environment

The Seva Hotel puts every effort to promote green growth development and share responsibility towards supporting environment preservation and sustainability. To this effect, The Seva Hotel is committed to:

 

  • Manage energy efficiently through usage of technology, low consumption equipment and timely maintenance, sufficient provision for natural light and heat, and engaging employees and guests for supporting best practices;
  • Promote paperless approach to services delivery, internal and external communication and correspondence;
  • Use of water economically through installation of appropriate fittings, timely maintenance, green washing and changing the mindset and behaviors of the staffs in saving water resources;
  • Encourage innovative and environmentally friendly products and amenities using waste as a resource thereby promote circularity for at source waste reduction
  • Follow green procurement, bulk purchase, and sustainable food consumptions in managing waste and carbon footprint reduction;
  • Usage of online platforms, tools, technologies and sustainable practices in business communication and operation;

C. Social

The Seva Hotel considers inclusivity as a fundamental approach to support individual and social well- being. The operation and management is significantly guided by its core values such as Integrity, accountability, transparency, honesty and care. In this sense, The Seva Hotel is committed to:

 

  • People first and business always approach to sustainable promotion and development;
  • Promote best practices on employment, remuneration, promotion, skilling on the basis of capability, performance, transparency and equality;

 

  • Ensure workplace safety, conducive working environment, social security system and flexible time for work-life balance, family and social bonding, and promote human rights and work culture;
  • Promote partnerships amongst stakeholders, suppliers and community linkages for similar interests bonding, trusts, long-term relationship, direct sourcing, visibility and creating a social and economic value proposition, and philanthropic initiatives;
  • Comply with Bhutan Green hotel Standards 2023, Labour Act of Bhutan 2007, Internal Service Rule of The Seva Hotel 2024 and related legislation.

D. Cultural

The interior and exterior design and architectural structure of the building vividly portrays the esthetic Bhutanese values, arts and crafts, the integral component of hotel construction and promotion. The Seva Hotel, as a responsible service provider genuinely value culture preservation as a moral responsibility. Therefore, the hotel is committed to:

 

  • Promote authentic Bhutanese food, dress, language, esthetic values, beliefs, local arts and crafts etc, that are of paramount national importance and uniqueness;
  • Share knowledge, display historical and popular books and reading materials about Bhutan and its cultural heritage;
  • Comply with Bhutan Green Hotel Standards 2023, Cultural Laws, Building Construction Regulation 2023 and related legislation.

E. Economic

The economic sustainability is fundamental aspect of sustainable development, promotion, and sustenance of hotel. To achieve this, the hotel is committed to:

 

  • Create economic value proposition through affordable and sustainable consumption and sale of premium products and services and derive maximum client’s satisfaction in terms of value for money spent and authenticity;
  • Follow circular economy, best practices and procure energy efficient and quality equipment to reducing operation cost and saving of resources;
  • Promote sustainable brand, maintain standards and attract responsible customers for visibility, image building, gaining trust and sustainable revenue generation;
  • Comply with Bhutan Green Hotel Standards 2023, Finance Law and related legislation of the county

F. Promotion and Branding

  • Create or promote authentic local products, services, and best practices as a sustainable brand in-line with the vision, ”Sustainability First” for marketing and promotion;
  • Create awareness on sustainable policy of the hotel and showcase the best practices as a responsibility in business operations for influencing and attracting the responsible travelers, travel partners, stakeholders, best practitioners, responsible suppliers, guests and staffs.
  • Use online platform such as website, social media channel, employees, guests and partners for promotion and visibility
  • Strive for recognition as a responsible service provider toward building image, trust and sustainable brand positioning.

G. Monitoring, Communication and Reporting

  • Appoint a Sustainability Manager for the implementation of Sustainable Policy, capacity building, awareness creation to the staff on best practices and also for hotel representation;
  • HoD Committee, the apex decision making body of the hotel should monitor the implementation of sustainable practices in business operations and provide way forward directives;

 

  • HoD of concerned department should be responsible in monitoring and assessing the waste generation record, energy and water usage on a daily basis and report to the Sustainability Manager on a quarterly basis for analysis;
  • The Sustainability Manager will prepare and publish an annual report for record, management appraisal and way forward planning towards improving sustainable practices in the hotel

H. Research S Development:

  • Create and introduce value added or new sustainable products and services, as well as to improving existing offerings based on evolving sustainable standards, best practices and technologies through research and innovation;
  • Study global market trend and sustainable practices need analysis and use innovation as a strategy for improving sustainability in business operation, planning, green marketing and brand positioning;
  • Aspire to become an agile hotel through continue research & development and capacity building
